Bite me

Bite me

Rodial's Glamoxy Snake Serum is an anti-wrinkle cream that bites back at the signs of aging. With a waiting list of 10,000, this is one beauty product people are desperate to try, despite the $150 price tag in America. The serum’s active ingredients mimic the effects of venom – temporarily freezing the tiny muscles that create wrinkles and plumping the skin to smooth out lines.

Why it matters

While Botox procedures use an isolated and purified version of a real toxin (Botulinum toxin) this anti-wrinkle cream takes snake venom as inspiration. Is this indicative of the extremes of the beauty market, as the craving for more permanent solutions entice people to take more risks with their health?

Fabric conditioner by the squirt

Fabric conditioner by the squirt

Asda have started a trial in their supermarkets, dispensing own brand fabric conditioner from a vending machine, which pumps the liquid from a large vat in the stockroom directly into a pouch. Customers are then encouraged to return and refill their empty pouches. The project will not only cut down the supermarket’s packaging cost, but also pass on a reduced cost to the customer. It costs £1.90 for the first pouch, and £1.50 for any refills. This compares with plastic bottles, which cost £2 for the same size.

Why it matters

This technique is applicable to a number of other liquids, such as shampoo, fruit juice etc. Will this act as a further catalyst for supermarkets to push their own-brand products? And what will a refillable trend mean for package design and new product variant launches?

Clothes for life

Clothes for life

Clothes For Life is a scheme set up by fashion retailer Monsoon, in which customers are encouraged to dig into their wardrobes and bring back any old, unwanted items from the store in exchange for £5 off any new purchase.

Why it matters

By consciously addressing the consumption of fashion like this directly, is Clothes For Life another example of how the lifecycle for fashion is becoming extended in consumers’ eyes?
