Virtual Shopkeepers

Virtual Shopkeepers

Wisemarkit.com is an online shopping platform in the US that lets Facebook members set up an online shop and curate products of their choice from third party websites. It’s like ‘Amazon’ without having to actually own the products. They promote the products through their social channels and earn a commission on every sale.

Why it matters

By personalising online selling, could an initiative like this help leverage social networks commercially and in an engaging manner? Can the influence of your friends add a layer of credibility and help drive virtual entrepreneurship?

Cargo espresso

Cargo espresso

Starbucks collaborated with design studio Nendo to put up a new concept coffee shop store called ‘Starbucks Espresso Journey’ in Tokyo. Not only is the shop made out of shipping containers, the coffee ordering process is quite unique. Before customers arrive to the counter, they must choose a book on a wall that talks about the coffee they’d like to drink.

Why it matters

Shipping containers finding a second life isn’t particularly new, but in this case, there’s something to be said about how these same containers have probably transported coffee beans at some point. Starbucks is also trying to educate their customers further by forcing them to find a book that will inform them of the coffee choice they’ve made. Will this coffee education appeal to busy Tokyoites? Would other food and retail brands benefit from inviting their customers to know more about their products in such an imposing way?

Charge it up at Starbucks

Charge it up at Starbucks

Starbucks is testing Duracell Powermats in 17 Boston coffee shops during the holiday season. Known for their free WiFi, Starbucks are extending their technology offering to mobile users who need to charge up for free and don’t have their charger at hand. The Powermats only work with external hardware, so the shops will be doing free giveaways and loaning these to customers during the trial period.

Why it matters

With the giveaways and offers, Starbucks is trying to prevent the initiative from being  undermined from the start. As for Duracell, this is a way of displaying its products outside regular stores and in a more practical environment.  Which stores and spaces could collaborate with brands and serve as new selling platforms?
