Light touch

Light touch

The LIFX bulb is a LED bulb that can be controlled through a smartphone app. You can change the colour and brightness and set them to turn on and off automatically at specific times. In addition to these conventional functionalities, you can set the bulbs to flash when you receive an e-mail or change colour to the rhythm of a song.

Why it matters

Perhaps more than the gimmicks, it is the basic functionalities of these LED bulbs that appeals to the comfort creatures inside; to be able to control every light in the room without leaving the sofa is a dream come true. But can these LED bulbs attract owners of commercial spaces (i.e. restaurants, stores)?

The all seeing, all knowing walls

The all seeing, all knowing walls

Wallbots are an innovation in housing technologies. They are user responsive robotic partition walls that communicate with each other. They can move, resize and join together to create different sized spaces and accommodate different room functions.

They also collect real-time information such as temperature, light and time of the day, while analysing the routine and behaviour of their user, taking information from their social networks.

Why it matters

In a time where many people live in urban areas and living space is scarce, Wallbots can help people to get the most out of the smallest apartments by being able to change one space into many functions. The walls read their user’s mood and social calendar through information taken from their social media posts then adjust accordingly. They also remember previous positions in order to improve their predictive response. In the future, we will see brands and products get more and more multifunctional – how can you add value for your customers?

Dual purpose packaging

Dual purpose packaging

Dutch pushchair manufacturer JOOLZ has decided to give the cardboard packaging of their products a second, useful, life. Directions are printed on the cardboard that allow the consumer to transform the box into a practical and beautiful product such as a chair, a lamp or a birdhouse. Taking inspiration from children, the potential of a simple cardboard box is now being explored by adults.

Why it matters

Apart from the sustainability aspect of no longer simply throwing out the cardboard packaging, there is also a very strong link to the brand mantra of Positive Design. Plus a strong connection to the fact that they build products through the eyes of a child. How can other companies expand what they do to other territories and thus cement their brand promise?
