Working for basic needs
Two nurses have launched a new volunteering project that aims at helping patients located in an isolated district in the northern Portugal. Their contract with the local authorities grants them lodging, a car for tending to patients and a small subsidy for food and other expenses.
Why it matters
In the current economic crisis, these two nurses have resorted back to a simple way of helping themselves while helping others: working in exchange for shelter and food. With so many people going through hard times, can this project grow beyond its initial concept? Will more and more people consider exchanging services to get their basic needs ensured?
EnableTalk is a glove that converts sign language into voice speech. The concept won Microsoft's Innovation Competition Cup award as its software converts signals to text and pronounces words out loud. The system is connected to an application via Bluetooth.
Cascais Green Map is a website (funded by the local municipality) where local citizens can register their green habits and behaviour (such as using energy saving lamps, selecting garbage, buying local products, etc), in an effort to promote sustainability and good citizenship.
