Working for basic needs

Working for basic needs

Two nurses have launched a new volunteering project that aims at helping patients located in an isolated district in the northern Portugal.  Their contract with the local authorities grants them lodging, a car for tending to patients and a small subsidy for food and other expenses.

Why it matters

In the current economic crisis, these two nurses have resorted back to a simple way of helping themselves while helping others: working in exchange for shelter and food. With so many people going through hard times, can this project grow beyond its initial concept? Will more and more people consider exchanging services to get their basic needs ensured?

The app that gives you food for thought

Food waste and hunger are serious problems that lie adjacent to one another. One is driven by over-abundance while the latter is driven by the prevalence of poverty. Flashfood is an app created by Arizona State University students that lets restaurants and cafes alert local charitable organizations that they have extra food they could pick-up for local shelters.

By using smartphones, the app can address a small part of the hunger crisis, by alerting interested recipients when and where there is new food to donate, while cutting down on the needless disposal of perfectly edible food.
