Working for basic needs
Two nurses have launched a new volunteering project that aims at helping patients located in an isolated district in the northern Portugal. Their contract with the local authorities grants them lodging, a car for tending to patients and a small subsidy for food and other expenses.
Why it matters
In the current economic crisis, these two nurses have resorted back to a simple way of helping themselves while helping others: working in exchange for shelter and food. With so many people going through hard times, can this project grow beyond its initial concept? Will more and more people consider exchanging services to get their basic needs ensured?

In order to highlight the fact that summertime is as life-endangering as winter for homeless people, the Abbé Pierre Foundation has set an interesting street operation in Paris. An ice statue representing a homeless man was placed in front of the Louvre. The statue melted as the day passed. The cardboard notice read: “During summertime, homeless people die as much as in winter. Let’s act”.
