Working for basic needs
Two nurses have launched a new volunteering project that aims at helping patients located in an isolated district in the northern Portugal. Their contract with the local authorities grants them lodging, a car for tending to patients and a small subsidy for food and other expenses.
Why it matters
In the current economic crisis, these two nurses have resorted back to a simple way of helping themselves while helping others: working in exchange for shelter and food. With so many people going through hard times, can this project grow beyond its initial concept? Will more and more people consider exchanging services to get their basic needs ensured?
To underline the fact that more than 10,000 children worldwide are dying from malnutrition everyday, Action contre la faim has created a giant symbolic banquet of 10,000 empty plates placed beneath the Eiffel Tower.
International pen manufacturer Montblanc’s ‘Signature for Good’ campaign for global literacy was brought to life with the recent unveiling of a portraiture collection featuring celebrities photographed as famous literary heroines. The autographed portraits will be auctioned and all the proceeds will go to UNICEF’s education and literacy programs. By choosing to support a cause that is so closely linked to its product, this initiative feels authentic and genuine.
