Working for basic needs
Two nurses have launched a new volunteering project that aims at helping patients located in an isolated district in the northern Portugal. Their contract with the local authorities grants them lodging, a car for tending to patients and a small subsidy for food and other expenses.
Why it matters
In the current economic crisis, these two nurses have resorted back to a simple way of helping themselves while helping others: working in exchange for shelter and food. With so many people going through hard times, can this project grow beyond its initial concept? Will more and more people consider exchanging services to get their basic needs ensured?

100$ Laptops and cars selling for under 2000$ have already been created. Now Adidas plans to build a sneaker for the so called 3rd world that will cost around 1€ and be produced on a non-profit basis. The brand will cooperate with Nobel prize winner Muhammad Yunus and has dedicated itself to create jobs and chase the utopia that nobody on earth has to walk around bare feet. It has not be decided yet if the shoes will be branded at all.
