Taking cover under plastic waste
The designer Garth Britzman has used plastic bottles to create a cover for a parking space. To give it a bit of colour, he added dyed liquid to the bottles to produce a specific design.
Why it matters
Is this an interesting and creative use of recycled material? Are practical yet artistic installations the way forward to help solve a very serious problem such as plastic waste?
Pepsi has designed a petroleum-free plastic bottle for use with its soft drinks line. The bottle is made from raw materials such as switch grass, pine bark and corn husks that are converted into a plastic material to create the bottles.
German company DNA4U now offer custom-made jewellery created using the wearer’s unique genetic code. The customer provides a saliva sample from which their DNA is isolated, before being treated and contained in a glass vial. This vial then becomes the centre of the piece of the jewellery design.
