Grow food in your fridge
Herbs and vegetables taste better when they are fresh. Hanna Sandstrom created a new refrigerator which provides additional space where herbs and plants can be planted and grown. Integrated light, temperature and moisture control, nutrition and water provide for growth and progress. With this refrigerator everyone can cultivate their own healthy food at home.
Why it matters
Does the convenience of being able to grow food inside your home make it more accessible to everyone? With outdoor space becoming scarce is this a real alternative to the garden allotment?
Architect firm Crosson Clarke Carnachan designed a house that literally sits on top of a sled, allowing it to be towed off to a different location whenever the need arises. Used as a holiday retreat, the Hut on Sleds is a beach house that occupies a floor space of 40 square meters. Equipped to accommodate a family of five, it comes with an open space (that can multitask as living, dining and kitchen areas), a bathroom and two sleeping zones (including a children's quarters with a three-tiered bunk).
Active Furniture, a project by Spanish designers Virginia Pol, Ferran Lajara and Cristina Guardiola, uses counter-intuitive design as an antidote to our increasingly sedentary lives. They require a level of exertion on the user's part to function, like the too-high coat hanger, which has climbing holds imbedded into the wall to reach it.
